Tubigan 28 new commercial variety with wide adaptation in irrigated lowland areas

Developing new variety for the most reliable irrigated lowland ecosystem is important to sustain rice productivity needed for the country's food security. For the past 10 years, advances in plant breeding methodologies have helped improved new varieties with useful genetic traits which made them more stable and widely adaptable. One of these elite lines, PR 37274-6-33-9-1-2 was developed in 2006 using marker-sided selection (MAS) for bacterial leaf blight resistance and was extensively evaluated in NCT from 2010 to 2013. In 2014, PR 37274-6-33-9-1-2 passed the standards for yield, pest' resistance and grain quality and can be planted widely in irrigated areas in the country. It was formally approved by the National Seed Industry Council (NSIC) on November 28, 2014 and was registered NSIC 2014 RC354 with local name Tubigan 28. Tubigan 28 matures in 110 to 112 days with number of productive tillers of 14, and medium height measuring 95 cm. In the on-farm trails, yield was consistently more than 5 t/ha (5.5 to 5.8 t/ha) and posted a maximum yield of 9.0 t/ha. Its stability was contributed by good reactions to the major insect pests and diseases such as blast, bacterial blight, sheath blight, white and yellow stem borers, and green leaf hoppers. However, it should not be planted in tungro hot spot areas. This variety also passed grain quality standards including eating quality. It has intermediate amylose content (21.0%) with long (6.9 mm) and intermediate shape of (3.0), high milling recovery (69.9%), fair brown rice (77.4%) and grade 2 head rice recovery (42.1%). It has good kernel quality with slightly white, glossy and translucent grains comparable to IR64.
