Comparative analysis of the tensile strength and bunchy top virus resistance of parentals and backcrosses of abaca (Musa textilis Nee) hybrids

Twenty-five plant samples from three generations of backcrosses of abaca hybrids and their parents were evaluated for their tensile strength, agronomic traits, and bunchy top virus resistance using BBTV gene specific marker, RGA markers, and SSR markers. Using molecular marker analysis, all abaca hybrids were found to contain the gene sequences for resistance from the donor parent, Pacol. Similarities in the banding patterns produced by using different primers were observed, which means recurrent parent genome was recovered in some of the abaca hybrids. Agronomic traits of the five genotypes were also assessed using analysis of variance and had the backcross hybrids compared to Pacol and Abuab. Significant differences were identified for fiber dry weight, percent fiber recovery, and tensile strength in Pacol and Backcross hybrids. Pacol is known for poor fiber tensile strength (20.88 kg/g-m) and Abuab with good fiber tensile strength of 27.21 kg/g-m. Significant differences with respect to either one or both parents were identified among the abaca hybrids for percent fiber recovery of 0.6-1.0% and fiber dry weight of 0.8-0.16 kg as compared to 0.12-0.31% and 0.03-0.08 kg, respectively. However, no significant difference was found on two agronomic traits-leaf sheath number (13-18) and girth (31-40 cm). As confirmed by the agronomic trait and fiber quality assessment, recurrent parent genome was continuously recovered until the third generation of backcross.
