Pulp from abaca (Musa textilis Nee) stripping wastes from handmade paper using low pH cooking formulation

Abaca stripping waste from cv. Inosa was utilized for pulp and handmade paper production. The pulp yield, pulping properties, quality of pulp handsheets produced from these waste materials and the quality of the resulting pulp effluents using the caustic soda and sulfite pulping process were evaluated. The average fiber yield recovered from the mature stalk of abaca cv. Inosa is only 1.31% while 9.96% constitutes the stripping wastes left after fiber extraction. For every two kilos of dried stripping wastes, an additional 64% pulp yield can be obtained regardless of the pulping process used. A significant difference in pulp yield was observed between the two pulping process regardless of raw materials cooked. Pulp yield was significantly higher in the soda sulfite process at 1136.15 grams (29% higher) pulp compared to the caustic soda process with only 878.55 grams. In addition, the soda sulfite process is more environment friendly as evidenced by the low pH (9.07) and residual alkali (0.05) content of the black liquor produced after the pulping process compared to the caustic soda process with very high pH (13.13) and residual content (6.83) which is already considered harmful to the environment. There is not much difference in terms of cost incurred in using the two pulping process. The soda sulfite process is only Php 0.70 lower than the caustic soda process.
