Freshwater blue-green alga Gloeocapsa compacta Kutzing (Chroocophyceae, Chroococcales) was collected from the ponds attached with the Typha plants and also in free floating condition during the month of August 2008 from district Badin, Sindh (Pakistan). Its ethanol extract was investigated for fatty acid (FA) and sterol compositions through column chromatography by using GC-MS and 'H-NMR spectrometric techniques. The analysis of FA-Methyl esters showed the presence of ten saturated and five unsaturated FAs. The saturated FAs were present in greater proportion (68.78 %) than unsaturated ones (29.06 %). Among saturated FAs, n-hexadecanoate was present in greater proportion (20.79 %), while 3,8-dimethyl-2,7-nonatrienoate was the major unsaturated FA (18.09 %). Besides them, one sterol such as beta-sitosterol was also detected and identified from this alga.
