Morphological characterization and genetic diversity assessment of Gabing San Fernando (Xanthosoma sagittifolium L. Schott Milet) in the Philippines

Collection, conservation, characterization and regeneration of Gabing San Fernando (Xanthosoma sagittifolium) were conducted to increase the genetic base and utilization of the germplasm collection. A total of 145 Xanthosoma accessions were collected from 25 provinces in 16 regions of the Philippines and being conserved in the field genebank of the National Plant Genetic Resources Laboratory (NPGRL). Highest number of collection was obtained from Nueva Vizcaya Province of Region 2, with 21 accessions. More collections will be conducted in areas where gaps were identified. Forty-two Xanthosoma accessions were morphologically characterized using the Descriptors' lists for Xanthosoma sagittifolium involving vegetative and corm characteristics. Corm samples were likewise submitted to the Analytical Services Laboratory for proximate analysis and oxalate content determination, an anti-nutrient property. Diversity analysis using the Shannon-Weaver Diversity Index showed that 6 characteristics obtained high index values ranging from 0.72 to 0.80 H'. These were width of breadth of lamina, length of breadth of lamina, petiole color, petiole length, weight of cormels per plant and corm size of maturity. This means that these morphological characteristics can already manifest the variation and diversity among the accessions. Eight promising accessions were selected based on corm characters that indicate potential yield, high dry matter, high protein content, and low oxalate contents of the corms. Lowest oxalate content obtained was 144.9 mg OA/100 g. New collections will be similarly characterized, evaluated and analyzed for diversity.
