In the paper are presented the most important theories that are dealing with rural development. The main theoretical contributions are sequenced causal and chronological decade by decade from the fifties of the XX Century when thze problem of achieving and improvement of rural areas development became actuall. It could be reckognized that up to the seventies when it was dominated egzogenous approach to the development, sinonimus for the rural development was development of agriculture. In the next decade had dominated the principle of endogenous development and local development potentials. After that, in the next few decades the development goals has changed and the combination of endogenous and egzogenous development was in play. Also there were some alternative approaches in use. The overall development as well rural development became multifunctional concept dependant on efficient fulfillment of multitask goals.
