Eight soil enzymes were investigated with chromogenic substrate methods in soil samples from distinct areas of Csongrád County (South-Hungary). Enzyme activities and some chemical parameters (humic material, mobile phosphorus and distinct heavy metals) were determined in soil collected from ten sampling sites in summer. Correlation analyses revealed that highest enzyme activities are present in agricultural soils with high mobile phosphorus content. The heavy metal levels also significantly affected the measured soil enzyme activities. Based on these results, phosphatase, protease and lipase activities are suggested to be useful as indicators of soil quality.
