Salinity in rice cultivated areas will become more serious in the coastal provinces of Cuu Long delta under climate changes. The results of phenotypic and genotypic analyses of 22 varicties against two salt concentrations of 0.4‰ and 0.6‰ NaCl showed that: (1) Correlation between the score of saline tolerance and the average of a hight increase of rice varieties at seedling stage negatively was correlated. (2) Negative correlation between the salt tolerance scores at seedlings with the level of salt tolerance at the flowering stage (expressed by grain yield per hill). (3) The number of SSR markers linked to the Saltoll locus found in tested rice varieties negatively correlated with their score of salt tolerance at seedling stage, but it showed a weakly, positive correlation with yield performance. Four old leading rice varieties for commercial rice production in the Cuu Long delta namely, OM576, AS996, OM2517 and OM1490 are salt tolerance varieties at the saline level of 0,4‰ NaCl. Multi-location yield trials in two years showed that some promising rice varieties like OM9581, OM9584, OM9915, OM9916 and OM9921 can be recommended for commercial rire production in saline affected areas in the Cuu Long delta due to their salt tolerance and grain quality.
