The rice variety OM 9577 was bred from the cross OM 6976/OM 5472 and selected for multi –location trials from 2011. The results showed that OM 9577 possessed high tolerance to salinity at 4‰ concentration and had a short duration of 100-107 days, high yield across various testing locations and production pilots (yield potential of 7-9 tons/ha in winter-spring season and 5-7 tons/ha in summer-autumn season). OM 9577 was moderately resistant to brown plant hopper (scale 4) and yellow dwarf and rice ragged stunt diseases, and slightly susceptible to blast (scale 5) and had good grain quality suitable for export. The variety was widely adapted and suitable to all cropping seasons in the year, particurlarly it could replace the existing rice varieties in salt-affected areas like OM 2517, OM 2717, OM 576 due to its ability to have higher yield and salinity tolerance.
