Ngeun is a mountainous district, located in the North-West of Sayaboury Province, with total natural area of 75,840 hectares and population density is around 21 people per one square kilometer. Researched results showed the specific characteristics of soils and soil classification in Ngeun District are as follows; Soil resource of surveyed area (potential and current agricultural lands with area of 39,139 hectares) in district are classified into 8 Major Soil Groupings: Fluvisols, Nitisols, Calcisols, Leptosols, Acrisols, Cambisols, Luvisols, Cambisols, Arenosols and divided into 18 Soil Units and 36 Soil Subunits. In general, soils in surveyed area have a rather high quality. Some common characteristics: Soils are normally acid; low pH; low cation exchangeable capacity (CEC). Base saturation (BS) and total exchangeable basic cations content are low. However, some characteristics such as organic carbon content (OC), total N, available potassium in some soil types are rather high (especially in surface horizons). There are over 90% of total surveyed area lands is distributed on topographic forms that are favorable for agricultural production (36,313.47 hectares of soils with slope degree of less than 15 °) and almost areas have deep and very deep soil depth (occupied about 80.00% surveyed area). The results also brought out the proposed recommendation of land use based on sustainable agriculture development.
