Sugar Production in Pakistan
2016
Hincica V
The contribution highlights the recent rapid growth of the importance of Pakistan sugar industry, but it also analyzes a group of current problems that represent an imminent risk to the development of the whole sector. It has been shown that the interests of millers and farmers are very different, so mutual relations between them are not optimal, research and development are not advanced, used technologies, capital and access to credit are not sufficient and the quality of crops, as well as of soil, is often debatable. Nonetheless, the biggest danger can be seen in the inability to increase yield and sugar content of sugarcane. A radical reform of the whole Pakistani sugar industry appears to be an efficient way out, which is, however, impossible without a broader political consensus.
