Food-drug interaction: the case of grapefruit juice.
2008
Uesawa, Y.
Here, we present an overview of two decades of work on the interactions between grapefruit juice (GFJ) and drugs, particularly on the mechanisms of these interactions and the interacting components in GFJ. We describe classical examples where GFJ enhances intestinal absorption of drugs, as well as newly discovered interactions with the inhibition of intestinal absorption. Work aimed at understanding the causal compounds in GFJ highlights the relationship between human physiology and food and is clinically important. Further understanding of this interaction may allow patients and their doctors to stop worrying about drug interactions with GFJ.
