Cardiac troponins are sensitive and specific markers of myocardial damage. They have been shown to be elevated in a number of primary cardiac and non-cardiac conditions. In cardiomyopathies, they are useful for detecting occult disease, and can provide prognostic information. They can be used to detect myocardial damage caused by the administration of doxorubicin, and have been shown to be elevated in cases of intoxication, as well as after anaesthesia. Other diseases that have been shown to increase troponin levels include gastric dilatation volvulus, pyometra and brachycephalic obstructive syndrome, as well as infectious diseases, including dirofilariasias, babesiosis and ehrlichiosis.
