Significant changes have taken place in the gas composition of the atmosphere that may lead to an increase in global temperature and high spatial and temporal variability. It is anticipated to lead to a more vigorous hydrological cycle, including more total rainfall and more frequent high intensity rainfall events as well as substantial changes in the precipitation pattern. These manifestations have significant impacts on soil erosion rates and threaten to increase the potential for soil erosion, making it one of the most severe challenges we may face in the 21st century. The available knowledge and tools for soil erosion controls that were effective in the past may no longer be effective in the future under the projected climate change. Hence, the current soil erosion problem should be mitigated using new and effective solutions such as the use of Erosion Control Blanket R3D. This technology originated in Germany and is being used highly in Europe at present. Erosion Control Blanket R3D is composed of a permanent, high-strength three-dimensional corrugated Polypropylene geogrid with a 100% coconut-fiber matrix. It is designed to provide long-term, vegetated erosion protection and reinforcement in a range of applications. Erosion Control Blanket R3D installed in unvegetated area will reduce soil loss under shear stress up to 3.2 psf (153 Pa) and boosts permanent vegetation performance up to 12 psf (576 Pa). In addition, the functions and technical characteristics of both cocomat and geogrid are already combined into this technology. Therefore this technology can reinforce and stabilize the soil while holding enough water for the soil and at the same time halting the soil runoff. It is definitely an effective tool which the authors highly recommend for soil erosion control purposes under the projected climate change.
