Genetic diversity and preliminary evaluation of selected winged bean (Psophocarpus tetragonolubus L.) germplasm at the national repository

Centers of greatest diversity of winged bean (Psophocarpus tetragonolobus L.) locally known as sigarilyas are found in Indonesia and Papua New Guinea (PNG) and are planted in large scale in Burma and PNG. Green pods of winged bean are widely used as vegetable in Southeast Asia, tubers are eaten as raw or cooked, young leaves and flowers are eaten as salad. Nutritional value of dry seeds has been recognized to be similar to soybean and as such, this crop has been processed similarly. At present, the NPGRL genebank holds 392 accessions of winged bean. Information about the traits and performance of these winged bean collections is essential to fully utilize its potential and be readily available to users. Thus, regeneration and preliminary pest and disease evaluation was carried out for 25 accessions of winged bean in November 2012 and October 2014 in Bay, Laguna [Philippines]. Shannon-Weaver diversity index (H sup 1) for qualitative and Pecetti Index for selected quantitative data were used to determine the extent of diversity of these collections. Results showed that these 25 winged bean accessions have low to high diversity in terms of its quantitative traits except for two characters. Thirty-two percent have low to medium and 27% with high diversity. Pod length varies from 12.6 to 37.7 cm, number of seeds per pod from nine to 15 and 10-pod weight 48.8 to 157.3 grams. Unique traits were observed in 50% (11 out of 22) of the qualitative traits which include cream, purple and dark brown seeds, light blue and purple flower keel and standard, cream mature pod, pod specks, purple wing, seed mottling, and lanceolate leaflet. This presents additional variability of the collection. No foliar disease was observed. However, six accessions are highly susceptible to aphids but Accession number 44 showed high resistance.
