Endoparasites and selected microbial pathogens of Palawan leopard cats (Prionailurus bengalensis heaneyi Groves, 1997) in Aborlan, Palawan, Philippines

Palawan leopard cats (Prionailurus bengalensis heaneyi Groves, 1997) may fall under a threatened conservation category. This study identified endoparasites and selected pathogens present in Palawan leopard cats and sub-feral domestic cats from Aborlan, Palawan, Philippines. Blood samples were collected from four Palawan leopard cats and eight domestic cats for serological detection of pathogens using dot-ELISA test kits and fecal samples were processed using formalin-ether concentration technique. Ten (10) species were identified from Palawan leopard cats: Toxoplasma gondii, Chlamydophila felis, Ancylostoma sp., Capillaria sp., Echinostoma sp., Hymenolepis nana, Isospora felis, Paragonimus sp., Physaloptera sp., and Trichostrongylus sp. T. gondii was the most prevalent serologically-detected pathogens were identified: T. gondii (87.5%) and C. felis (12.5%). Palawan leopard cats from Aborlan may be highly infected due to its diet of rodents. This is not an alarming situation in the wild but other factors may aggravate the infection following clinical manifestations. This is the first report of the pathogen fauna of the leopard cat in the Philippines, the first report of P. b. heaneyi mammalian diet, and the first report of C. felis in leopard cats.
