Optimizing rice straw, corn chaff, and binder levels for fuel briquettes

Rice Straw and Corn Chaff were used as raw biomass and cassava starch as binder to form the uncarbonized briquettes. Briquettes were formed using densification mold assembly attached to the universal testing machine and then dried. After sun drying, briquettes were subjected to different tests for assessing the quality of fuel. The suitability of briquetted fuel as domestic fuel was studied with standard water boiling test. It was observed that briquettes with 50-35-15 combination of Rice Straw, Corn Chaff, and Binder respectively burnt with good flame, emitted less smoke, less time to boil the water, and less in ignition time compared to other treatments. Better results in briquettes with 50-35-15 combinations of rice straw, corn chaff, and binder briquetted fuel as 14.08 MJkg-1. Response surface regression via desirability functions established optimum mixture combination of rice straw=50%, corn chaff=35%, binder=15%.
