The investigation sought to establish whether parental involvement at SPS was significantly correlated to the academic performance of Grade 4 and 7 students. In particular, it aimed to identify the socio-demgraphic characteristics of the parents, to determine parental role construction and perceptions of self-efficacy for helping the child succeed in school, to determine the relationship between parental involvement and student academic performance. The sampling method was stratified sampling using the two strata as Grade 4 and Grade 7 levels. Proportional allocation was used in determining the sample size from each level. A Spearman correlation analysis was used to determine the relations between parental characteristics, parental involvement and academic performance. Parental characteristics that correlated with parental involvement include gender (females), younger parents, high socio-economic families (e.g. high income or high educational level etc.) and employment. The significant relationship between mothers' commitment and ensuring the child succeeds in school, and the satisfaction of high socio-economic parents with school invitation and communication, affirm empirical findings that parental involvement correlates with the academic performance of the child. This clearly implies the importance of parental involvement in the learning of the child at the participating school and the need to continue fostering this.
