Comparison of irradiated carrageenan and Wokozim on the early growth performance of in vitro-derived 'Lakatan' plantlets

Seaweed-based extracts are known to be effective growth stimulants in a diverse selection of plant species. In this study, the authors compared irradiated carregeenan and Wokozim, a commercially- available bio-stimulant, using in-vitro-derived 'Lakatan' plantlets as test plants. Two independent experiments were performed to test three concentrations of carrageenan (0.01, 0.02, 0.03%, v/v) and Wokozim sup R (0.01%, 0.2% and 0.3% v/v) and a control on plant height, number of fully-unfurled leaves, SPAD value, pseudostem girth, and soil pH. In Experiment 1, each bio-fertilizer was foliar-fed at 2-week intervals. Only soil pH was affected by the treatments at the end of a 3-month period. Experiment 2 tested two methods of application-foliar vs drench-to access growth improvements. Experiment 2 was designed as a split-plot in RCBD [randomized complete block design] with subsampling, with the method of application as the main plot factor and the bio-fertilizers as subplot factors. The bio-fertilizer concentrations were the same as in Experiment 1, but the application frequency was changed from every other week to once a week. Here, the method of application and the type of bio-fertilizer had a strong combined effect on plant height (p0.0001), number of fully-unfurled leaves (p0.0025), SPAD value (p0.0001), and pseudostem girth (p0.0562) based on measurements taken one month after bio-fertilizer application. Since interaction was found between the method of application and the type of bio-fertilizers, planned group comparisons were only performed for method of application. Drench was better than foliar application in the concentration ranges tested for carrageenan and Wokozim sup R. However, whether drench or foliar, Wokozim gave better overall growth than carrageenan, which itself produced better growth than control. Further, growth variables exhibited a positive linear association with foliar application, but a parabolic association with soil drench.
