Evaluation of seedling traits related to yield in direct-seeded rice under seedling stage drought stress

Seedling traits such as crown root production, mesocotyl elongation, and root porosity may show genetic variation, but further analysis is needed to determine how these traits can be useful for breeding, particularly in the context of traits for direct-seeded rice in drought-prone environments. In this study the authors aimed to determine the combinations of seedling traits that increase yield under direct seeding and drought stress. The authors evaluated 490 genotypes from an IR64 x Dular population to identify the best-performing lines under direct seeding, as well as the seedling stage traits related to their performance. Statistical analysis was conducted using Plant Breeding Tool (PBTools Version: 2.0.1, IRRI). Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was used to identify significant differences among genotypes and Least Square Means were computed to rank the genotypes for each trait. Genotypes IR 92132-1137-1-1-1-1-1-1 and IR 92132-205-1-1-1-1-1-1 showed highest root porosity and mesocotyl length, respectively, from the IR64 and Dular population. Crown root number, seminal roots, and porosity appeared to be correlated with the shoot biomass. The yield showed a positive correlation with the shoot biomass. This analysis can serve as a recommendation of traits to target in selecting genotypes for development of new direct-seeded rice varieties.
