Insect pests and diseases of rice and banana under different Philippine climate types

The effect of climate change is indicated by the deviations in weather patterns due to increased carbon dioxide (CO2) and temperature levels. This has been a huge factor in crop pest and disease distribution in different areas in the Philippines. This study deals with the presence of pests and diseases found in rice and banana in different sites in the Philippines. Sites were chosen based on its climate type: Type 1 - Carranglan, Nueva Ecija and Lambunao, Iloilo; Type 2 - Catubig, Northern Samar and Siargao, Surigao Del Norte; Type 3 - Calatrava Romblon and Aborlan, Palawan and; Type 4 - Lake Sebu, South Cotabato. The profiling was done from February to October of 2016. Hemipterans such as green leafhopper, ricebug and rice black bug were common in Type 1 and 4 areas while lepidopterans such as cutworm, leaf folder and stem borer were observed in type 2 and 3 areas. Rice blast and sheath blight were common in all climate types while tungro was only observed in type 1 areas. For banana, lace bug and whitefly were found in all climate types. Sigatoka was present in all climate types while Cordana leaf spot was prevalent in type 2 areas. These initial findings can aid in monitoring probable changes in pest and disease distribution across climate types.
