Evaluation of CERES-wheat model for planting date and deficit irrigation under semi-arid conditions of Faisalabad

Water scarcity has become a grave issue of this era. Availability of irrigation water as a basic input for crops has lessened from last few years. This situation is expected to aggravate in near future as there is no alternate available. Along with this planting date has always been a decisive issue as wheat planting gets delayed generally and farmer suffers monetarily so an experiment was conducted to quantify the effect of planting date and deficit irrigation on growth, grain produce and water use efficiency of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) using CERES-Wheat Model. Modeling has emerged as a practicable tool for researchers and farmers also in developed part of the world. Split plot design was employed for the field experiment. Significantly maximum grain yield (4491 kg per ha) and maximum biological yield (12913 kg per ha) was recorded by the treatment having irrigation at 45 mm PSMD (I2). CERES-Wheat Model showed reasonably good performance and calibration results show that there was a small difference between predicted and observed values for the best treatment (I2) with r-square value of 0.95 for grain yield and 0.93 for biological yield. Water use efficiency (TDM) was 6.40 g m-2 mm-1 while Water use efficiency (GY) was 1.97 g m-2 mm-1. Radiation use efficiency (TDM) was 3.93 g MJ-1 and radiation use efficiency (GY) was 1.18 g MJ-1. Maximum cumulative PAR (673.52 MJ m-2) was achieved. Model estimation was reasonably good for total dry matter and grain yield while simulation of leaf area index was fairly poor. It under estimated for Leaf area index.
