Forage production potential of oat (Avena sativa L.) grown in association with canola (Brassica napus L.) under variable seed proportions
2015
Ali, Y.
A study was conducted to investigate the fodder production potential of oat sown in mixture with canola under different seed proportion. For this purpose field experiment was carried out at Agronomic Research Area, Department of Agronomy, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad, during the year 2013-14. In the experiment oat was inter cropped with canola at different seed proportion 100:0, 80:20, 60:40, 40:60, 20:80 and 50:50% of oat: canola. Net plot size 5 m x 2.1 m and crops were sown at 30 cm apart rows. Seed rates used were 75kg and 5kg/ha respectively. Maximum plant height 141.96cm was recorded in (100% oat) treatment. N umber of leaves showed no effect while the number of tillers were maximum at (20% oat + 80% canola). Effect of seed proportion of inter crop on green and dry matter yield were maximum at (100% canola) and (20% oat = 80% canola). Crude protein Percentage was maximum at (20% oat + 80% canola) 14.21 % crude protein and 12.50% Ash percentage was recorded. Therefore, to have higher forage yield of good quality oat: canola mixture should be sown with 60:40% ratio of oat and canola.
