Influence of different concentrations of cobalt to enhance the efficiency of Rhizobium phaseoli in mung bean (Vigna radiata L.) under rice-mung bean cropping system
2015
Naveed, M.
A field trial to investigate the different concentrations of cobalt and efficiency of Rhizobium phaseoli for the nodulation, yield and quality of mung bean (Vigna radiata L.) was carried out at the Agronomic Research Area, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad during spring, 2014. Experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design (RCBD) with factorial arrangement's and three replications, having a net plot size of 5.0m x 1.5m. The experiment was comprised of treatments: control, seed treatment with Co at the rate of 0.3 g per kg, 0.4 g per kg, 0.5 g per kg, 0.6 g per kg, 0.3 g per kg of seed + Rhizobium phaseoli inoculation, 0.4 g per kg of seed + R. phaseoli inoculation, 0.5 g per kg of seed + R. phaseoli inoculation and 0.6 g per kg of seed + R. phaseoli inoculation. Crop was sown in 30 cm apart rows using a dibbler maintaining plant to plant distance of 10 cm. The data on growth, nodulation, yield and quality parameters was recorded using standard procedures. According to the results the maximum plant population (40 m-2), highest plant height (50.0 cm), the maximum number of pods bearing branches per plant (9.5) the highest number of nodules per plant (15.0). The highest number of pods per plant (26.33), maximum number of seeds per pod (9.06), 1000 grain weight (45.33 g), seed yield (1272.0 kg per ha), biological yield (3473.3 kg per ha), protein content (28.33%) and chlorophyll intensity index (1.73) was observed in treatment where seed was treated with cobalt at 0.5 g per kg of seed with R. phaseoli inoculation. The highest cost benefit ratio (2.60) was obtained in the same treatment. In conclusion higher yield, nodulation and economic benefit can be obtained under Faisalabad conditions when the mung bean seed is treated with the cobalt at the rate of 0.5 g per kg + R. phaseoli inoculation.
