Exploring the qualitative and quantitative response of various linseed cultivars under different nitrogen levels

A field experiment was carried out to determine the effect of different levels of nitrogen on morphology, yield and quality of linseed genotypes at Agronomic Research Area, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad during 2014-15. The experiment comprised of two factors. Factor-A comprised of linseed cultivars, V1 (Chandni), V2 (LS-29), V3 (LS-90) and V4 (LS-95) and factor-B comprised of five nitrogen levels, N0 (control), N1 (25 kg per ha), N2 (50 kg per ha), N3 (75 kg per ha) and N4 (100 kg per ha). The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with split-plot arrangements having three replications. A standard methodology was used for data recording on various yield and quality parameters. The data revealed that different linseed cultivars differed significantly with respect to various growth, yield and quality parameters. Among tested cultivars Chandni proved to be superior over other cultivars as indicated by different parameters. Different nitrogen levels also had significant effect on most growth and yield parameters but had non-significant effect on number of branches per plant, 1000-seed weight and seed oil content. Maximum number of plants m-2 (47.18), plant height (72.66 cm), technical stem length (62.92 cm), number of branches per plant (5.38), number of capsules per plant (54.30), number of seeds per capsule (6.16), 1000-seed weight (6.78 g), seed yield (607.8 kg per ha), biological yield (3] 17.5), harvest index (23.8%), seed oil content (39.2%) and oil yield (221.9 kg per ha) were recorded from plots where nitrogen was applied at rate of 75 kg per ha (N3). The interaction effect of cultivars and nitrogen levels was non-significant. It is concluded that Chandni cultivar performed better with the application of 75kg nitrogen per ha.
