Morphometric and meristic differentiation between grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) and silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix)

Present research work was planned to check the morphometric and meristic differentiation between Chinese carps i.e. grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) and silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix). The phenotypic variations viz. total length, body width, body depth, forked length, standard length, head length, snout length, dorsal fin length, pectoral fin length, pelvic fin length, anal fin length, depth of anal fin, eye diameter, total body weight, caudal fin length, pre-orbital distance, post-orbital distance, pre-anal distance and meristic characters are the countable structures occurring in series viz. lateral line scale count, scales above the lateral line, scales below the lateral line, dorsal fin rays count, pelvic fin rays count, pectoral fin rays count, anal fin rays count and caudal fin rays count were measured and recorded between these two fish species. The data on these morphometric and meristic characters were analyzed by using univariate statistical technique. Twelve morphometric characters viz. total, fork, standard and head length, body depth, dorsal fin, pectoral fin, pelvic fin and anal fin length, total body weight, caudal fin length and pre orbital distance showed significant difference between grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) and silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix). Body depth, snout length, depth of anal fin, post orbital distance and pre anal distance were not significantly different. In case of meristic characters lateral line scale count, scales about the lateral line, scales below the lateral line, pelvic fill rays count were significantly) different between two species while the difference among dorsal fin rays, pectoral fin rays, anal fin rays and caudal fin ray counts were statically non-significant .
