Effect of temperature on growth, flowering and corm production of Gladiolus grandiflorus L. cv. Amsterdam
2014
Aleem, A.
Gladiolus (Gladiolus grandiflorus) is an important and popular bulbous cut flower grown all over the world. Present study was carried out to check the effect of temperature on growth and development of cultivar Amsterdam thereby sowing in field on different dates. First sowing was done on 5th October followed by two sowing dates at regular intervals of fifteen days. Experiment was laid out according to Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three treatments which were replicated thrice. The results regarding the vegetative growth, flowering and corms development showed a considerable variation in response to different temperatures due to sowing at different dates. Early sprouting as well as best vegetative growth and flowering was observed during 5th October sowing. Sowing of gladiolus early in October showed best results among all the treatments because of optimum temperature (20.1 degree C) for growth, flowering and corm production during the months of October to December.
