Correlation studies for yield related traits in tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.)
2016
Raza, B.
Tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum mill.) belongs to Solanaceae family and genus solanum. It is the most widely cultivated and important vegetable crop after potato. Correlation is one of the genetic tools that give information about association between yield and quality traits of tomato. Yield is a complex character, its direct improvement is complicated. Understanding of the correlation among different plant traits help a plant breeder to develop an ideal genotype. The experiment was conducted in the experimental area of the Institute of Horticultural Sciences, University of Agriculture Faisalabad, during Rabi season. Seven hybrids of tomato were grown with two replications in randomize complete block design. The results of analysis of variance showed high significant differences for all the traits except for the number of locules per fruit. The experiment revealed a highly significant positive correlation between plant height, number of branches per plant, number of truss per plant, number of flowers per truss, number of fruit per truss, average fruit weight, pulp to seed ratio, fruit width, fruit length with yield.
