Ralstonia solanacearum is one of the two bacteria on potato with quarantine status both in EPPO region and Serbia because the pathogen causes huge economic losses on different cultivated plants, survives in soil and water, and there are no efficient measures for its control. In Serbia, it was fi rst detected in the vincinity of Gornji Milanovac in 2010. In the following four years, the pathogen was detected and confi rmed in ware potato tuber samples in three counties in the Province of Vojvodina (Zapadno-Bački, Južno-Bački and Srednje-Banatski). In seed potato, the bacterium was not detected in any of the tested samples. Additionaly, the pathogen was confirmed in two samples of ware potatoes from import in 2012 and 2013. Crucial elements of control programs of race 3 R. solanacearum include the following: use of healthy seed, early and accurate detection and timely reporting on the pathogen presence, quarantine measures on contaminated fields or warehouses, crop rotation, weed control and destruction of volunteer potato plants, avoidance of superficial irrigation water and education. The findings of the bacterium in ware potatoes, both imported and produced in Serbia, show that R. solanacearum is a continual threat to potato production in our country. Therefore, the monitoring of seed and ware potatoes should be continued.
