Agriculture is the main source of nitrate pollution of surface and underground waters. A high residual mineral nitrogen content after harvest and at autumn is an important risk factor. To get data on level of nitrates in apple orchards mineral nitrogen content was determined to depth of 90 cm in five sites with different soil-climate conditions at autumn in years 2015 and 2016. The highest nitrate contents were observed in orchards with irrigation or fertigation. The risk of leaching during winter period was indicated with amount of mineral nitrogen and water needed for refi lling soil water content of soil layers to field capacity and with use of simple leaching model. Due to relatively dry autumns and winters the risk of nitrate leaching under 90 cm was negligible in the experimental years.
