Harnessing community radio stations for improved dissemination of agriculture information in the rural communities

Radio is one of the best media for agricultural information dissemination especially in the communities where agricultural extension workers are limited. Aside from its local availability. It is the cheapest and fastest way of blasting information during time and manpower constrained situations. It is also indiscriminately accessible to the populace. The Madiskarteng Pagsasaka radio program of Philrice Isabela has evolved from its simply school-on-the air format to Science and Technology-based. From its previous focuses to rice farmers, the program now targeting the rice industry stakeholders, students and out-of-school youth and even women. The program previously had 2 radio stations as partners, but with the strengthened partnership with SUCs and other LGUs, now it has 5 community radios from the provinces of Cagayan, Isabela, Nueva Vizcaya and Quirino. Others station in Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) were already identified for partnerships to widen the program reached. As to initial monitoring, listenership in terms of programs reached increased due to increased area of broadcast of the 5 radio stations. In the 2014 pilot year of the program, an average of 14 text and calls were monitored during the day of airing and an average of 4 texts and call outside the airing days. But with the increased number of partner-radio stations in the number of text and calls were more than tripled. This shows increased leaderships who can benefit from the radio program. Also based from the feedback received via texts and calls 43% of these are related to seeds and varieties, 22% on pest management and 18% on nutrient management. They were also interested on rice-based technologies like mushroom production and vermicomposting. Students were generally feedbacking on the ICT-based tools and resources they like to access and utilize.
