Career Education Divide According to the Locations of Elementary Schools

The purposes of this study were to investigate the divide of the elementary school's career education environment, operation, participation and performance according to school locations (big city, small and medium city, rural area, island and remote area), and to identify the impact of school locations on career development competencies of students. This study analyzed the data the School Career Education Survey (2017) which was conducted on 400 elementary school teachers and 7,879 students. Data analysis included cross-tab analysis using chi-square test, analysis of variance, and hierarchical multiple regression analysis. The main results are as follows. First, according to the elementary school locations, there were educational gaps in career education budget allocation, career teacher placement, and career education department setup. Second, there was not much difference in school career education operations according to the elementary school locations, but students participated in career education activities in big city were more than small and medium city, and island and remote area. Third, elementary school students in the big city showed higher level of school satisfaction, career education satisfaction, and career development competencies than small and medium city students. Fourth, it was found that the locations of elementary schools had a significant effect on the career education performance of the student career development competencies. Based on the results of this study, the researcher suggested the policy support for the schools in the locations where career education is poor, and the in-depth study investigate the cause of the career education divide according to the school locations.
