The paper presents the results of the valorization of the most important forest ecosystems in `Tara` National Park with special reference to the forests within 17 sites under protection regime level I. Mt. Tara was declared a national park in 1981 according to the Law on National Parks (`Official Gazette of SRS`, No. 41/1981). In 2015, 34 years after its establishment, a revision of the National Park was carried out and a new surface area of 24,991.82 ha was established. The area under protection regime I amounts to 3,323.92 ha or 13.30% of the total area of the National Park. This area hosts the most important natural values of `Tara` National Park in the following 17 strict nature reserves: `Bilo`, `Ljuti Breg`, `Crvene Stene`, `Studenac`, `Gorušice`, `Zvezda`, `Vranjak`, `Zmajevački Potok`, `Crveni Potok`, `Kanjon Brusnice`, `Aluška Planina`, `Kremići`, `Klisura Dervente`, `Klisura Rače`, `Račanska Šljivovica`, `Kanjon Sklopovi` and `Pušine`. The highest value of Tara is Serbian spruce (Picea omorika), tertiary relict and endemic represented in 12 strict nature reserves.
