Competitiveness of specialist vineyards in selected European Union countries in the years 2004−2015

The paper aims to assess the competitiveness and efficiency of European farms specializing in viticulture production. The analysis was conducted for selected European Union countries using data from the years 2004−2015. In the analysed period, there was a large diversity in the resources used by these farms. The largest wine farms in terms of area were from Bulgaria, France, Spain, Austria and the Czech Republic; and in terms of labour from Bulgaria, France, the Czech Republic, Romania and Germany; while in terms of capital respectively in France, Germany, Italy, the Czech Republic and Austria. In the studied countries, the resources of land and capital increased, while labour remained at unchanged level. By calculating the competitiveness index, it was found that the French and German farms were the most competitive. The lowest competitiveness was found for Bulgarian, Portuguese, Spanish and Croatian farms. Based on the research, it is argued that obtaining income parity on the level of remuneration of hired employees does not guarantee development opportunities for farms specializing in viticulture production in selected EU countries.
