Makabuhay (Tinospora rhumpii) stem decoction against gastrointestinal helminths of goats (Capra hircus)

Parasitic resistance to chemical dewormers among livestock is a problem faced by animal raisers hence there is a dire need to evaluate the efficacy of herbal dewormers such as makabuhay. Makabuhay stem was boil-extracted for 30 and 40 minutes and the decoction was administered at 2,4,6 ml per kilogram body weight to 72 heads cross-bred goats from November 2009 to January 2010 at Labnig, San Juan, Ilocos Sur [Philippines]. The experimental goats were distributed at random into 8 treatments with three replications following the Completely Randomized Design. Two species of gastrointestinal helminths were identified affecting the experimental animals, which include Strongyle-type spp and Amphistome spp. The Makabuhay stem decoction administered at 4-6 ml boil-extracted for 30 minutes reduced the (EPG) count in goats. This was classified as effective following the standard criteria set in the interpretation of the efficacy of anthelmentic. The makabuhay stem decoction was also found comparable to commercial anthelmintic in reducing the EPG count. Based on the findings, makabuhay stem decoction administered at 4-6 mL/kg body weight boil-extracted for 30 minutes can be an alternative means of solving gastrointestinal helminthoses especially in areas where the mentioned plant species is abundant as a substitute to expensive commercial anthelmintic.
