Farming systems are highly dynamic and change over time in response to a number of determinants. Seven key drivers analysed below shape the development of farming systems in sub-Sahara Africa. The relative importance of these drivers, how they manifest, and how they interact, differs between farming systems. This needs to be considered in developing science and policy options to improve food security and reduce poverty
