Effects of Bacillus velezensis on Colletotrichum acutatum: Causal agent of apple bitter rot

Apple is one of the most profitable fruits that can be stored for a longer period of time under adequate conditions. However, during storage, apple fruit quality may be significantly reduced by phytopathogenic fungi. Among the most significant pathogens of apple fruits is the species Colletotrichum acutatum - causal agent of apple bitter rot. Control of this pathogen, as well as of other causal agents of apple storage rots, mostly relies on chemical measures applied prior to harvest. However, growing concern about toxicity of pesticides, fungicide resistance occurrence and lack of post-harvest products to be applied against these pathogens, point to the significance of biological control measures in sustainable development of the production. The aim of this study was to determine whether B. velezensis obtained from the Collection of Microbiological Cultures of the Faculty of Technology, University of Novi Sad shows the potential as biological agent for control of this pathogen. In vivo experiments showed that B. velezensis, produced in the way as it was the case in this study, has no prospect for application in apple fruit protection against bitter rot. However, the demonstrated high antifungal activity in in vitro trial indicates the justification of further research aiming at its efficacy improvement in vivo.
