The use of pomegranate and pistachio hulls as alternative roughage in lambs fattening
Kaya, Z.
An experiment was carried out to determine the effect of pomegranate peel (PP) and Pistachio hulls (pH) used as certain part of the wheat straw (WS) on some performance parameters and the production of some green house gases of female Awassi lambs. Fifteen sheep were used in the completely randomized design with 45-d periods and 3 treatments: 1- Control, (90 % concentrate + 10 % WS); 2- PP (90 % concentrate + 5 % PP; 5 % WS), 3- pH (90 % concentrate + 5 % pH; 5 % WS). Intake of dry matter, live weight gain, and feed conversion ratio were measured. The emissions of enteric gaseous such as CH4, CO2 and N2O production were also measured. Dry matter intake, live weight gain, and feed conversion were not change by inclusion of PP and pH in the diet for 0-6 week‟s periods. However, inclusion of PP decreased feed intake during 0-3 week‟s periods (P<0.05) but feed intake were similar in all groups during experiment. Concentrations of green house gases (g/day/lamb during CH4, CO2) and total N2O (g/day/lamb) emissions from manure were not affected by inclusion of PP and pH in the diet (P>0.05). The results suggested that PP and pH supplementation has not reduced CH4, CO2 production but pH supplementation has showed a tendency for reducing N2O emissions from manure of the lambs (P=0.06).
