The flora of Turkey, which is rich in biological diversity, contains many plants species including ornamental plants. Hundreds of species of ornamentals such as bulbs, rhizomes and tubers are also endemic plants. This study contains activities of ‘Ornamental Plant Genetic Resources Project’ that have been carried out since 1964 at Aegean Agricultural Research Institute (AARI). The aim of the study is determination and protection of the genetic richness in our country’s flora those can be used as ornamental plants and providing starting material to the breeding. Within this study seed, herbarium and some vegetative material samples were collected, conserved, multiplication and characterization activities have already been carried out. At present, 65 samples have been protected at conservation pads. As a result, during the study it has been observed that natural flora has been destroyed unconsciously and many plant species are threatened with extinction. In addition, the result of vegetative conservation studies showed that there have been difficulties in the conservation of some species; however, some of them cannot be conserved at all due to the ecological conditions of Aegean Region. In conclusion, there is a need for determining and implementing new strategies for the conservation of ornamental plant genetic resources.
