ON THE RECRUITMENT AND ABUNDANCE OF JUVENILES OF THE FRESHWATER PRAWN MACROBRACHWM BIRMANICUM CHOPRAI IN THE MIDDLE STRETCH OF THE RIVER GANGA

The paper deals with a study of the juveniles of the north Indian freshwaterprawn, Macrobrachium birmanicum choprai, in the middle stretch of theGanga river system, between Varanasi and Patna (about 390 kg), during June-September of 1979 and 1980. Their distribution is being recorded for the firsttime, estimating their abundance at sixteen selected centres. Taking the numberof larvae per collection as the index of abundance, the variation in abundance isestimated, which, on subjecting to the Chi-square test, is found significant. Theresults are discussed in the light of the accounts available for other palaeomonids.
