All cellulosic materials have negative charges whether in solid or dissolved conditions. The negative charge occurred upon the presence of carboxyl groups and proton exchange of hydroxyl groups with water. The negative surface of the fibre will create electrical repulsive forces where these forces prevent the fibres from adhering to one another. One way to attract the fibres to each other is by changing the surface charge, which can be done by adding cationic additives. Cationic precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) and cationic polyethyleneimine (PEl) were used in order to change the surface charge ofoil palm empty fruit bunch (EFB) fibres. Zeta potential ofthe fibres was measured using zeta potential analyzer.
