Preservation of milled rice using carbon dioxide

6400 tonnes of local rice of which and Thai rice of which 10% were broken were treated with carbon dioxide (C02) and phosphine (PH3). The milled rice of which was stored in two separate warehouses containing 32 stacks of 200 tones each for 16 mos. (maximum). Half of the total stacks was treated with CO2 and the rest with PH3. After being treated, the plastic enclosure was kept in situ to prevent insect reinfestation. During storage, the changes in moisture content, temperature and quality of the grain as well as the extent of insect and fungal infestations were investigated to determine the effectiveness of these treatements. The changes in quality of the grain in terms of moisture content, yellow and discoloured grain, protein, fat, aflatoxin content and fungal infestation were discussed. It was concluded that CO2 could be used effectively to preserve the milled rice of which for a long term storage
