Gene effects on pea seedling root characteristics

A genetic study on 9-day old pea seedling root length, root weight and number of lateral roots was conducted on four populations. Estimates of mid-parental heterosis were generally high for all the characteristics. Estimates of inbreeding depression were highly variable among populations and characteristics. Broad-sense heritability for root length varied with populations, ranging from 0.07 to 0.63. The estimates ranged from negative to 0.59 for root weight, and zero for number of lateral roots. Narrow-sense heritability varied greatly with populations and characteristics, with estimates generally moderate to high. Both additive and dominance effects were important for seedling root length in all populations. For seedling root weight, additive and dominance were important in three populations, while digenic epistasis was found predominating in one.
