The study on the effect of nitrogen fertilization program on growth and N uptake of potted chrysanthemums cv. Time Fire, grown under lowland conditions in soilless culture system was conducted. The total leaf area and leaf dry weight were not significantly affected by four different N fertilization schedules. However the total dry weight of plant treated with 250 mgL-¹ throughout was similar to those receiving various N concentrations during the growing period. Hence maintaining 250 mgL-¹ N throughout the vegetative growth stage did not give any beneficial effect on dry mass accumulation and consequently on flowering as well. Since flower development based on flower number and flower size was not affected by reducing N at flowering stage, it is possible to reduce N level to 75 mgL-¹ at this growth stage so that fertilizer cost and environmental pollution especially to groundwater could be reduced. Nitrogen uptake was highest during vegetative growth. Reducing N levels at mature stage did not affect nutrient content in tissues.
