Dereplication of the NO inhibitory fractions of the Melicope ptelefolia, using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC)-diode array detector (DAD)-mass spectrometry (MS), has identified seven main constituents. The compounds were identified as kokusaginine (1), compound 2, [possibly kokusagine, (2a) or 5methoxymaculine (2b)], 2,4,6-trihydroxy-3-prenylacetophenone (3), 2,4,6 trihydroxy-3-geranylacetophenone (4), 2,4, 6-trihydroxy-3geranylgeranylacetophenone (5), 3-{4-0-(3,7-dimethyl-2,6-octadienyl)phenyl}-2-propenoic acid (6) and 2,4,6-trihydroxy-3-farnesylgeranylacetophenone (7). While the identity of 1, 4 and 6 were unequivocally confirmed by isolation and spectroscopic evidences, the identification of the other compounds are tentative, based on their MS and MS/MS data. Compound 4 is a new natural product, while compounds 5 and 7 are tentatively new.
