Country paper for Papua New Guinea
1998
Saulei, S.
There are 14 species of Acacia in PNG of which 9 are confined to the country. Little research has been on reforestation, agroforestry etc. related to Acacias as more attention is paid to pines and Eucalyptus deglupta. There are stands of various acacia species for amenity purposes in rural areas, parks and fieldsmostly A. mangium and A. auriculiformis. Large areas of grasslands are being created through the deforestation of 350,000 ha per year. Papua New Guinea has large mineral resources, the mining of which creates wastelands which need reforesting. Also the logged over areas need replanting and only recently large logging companies have started to get involved in replanting. The major problems in reforestation are but rot, social attitudes resistance to unfamiliar species, pathogens and insects in degraded grasslands, and growth of Acacias is poor in imperata grass.
