Development potential of marine recreational fisheries in Malaysia with reference to fishing waters and fish species

Recently, the trend of recreation in Malaysia has maneuvered towards nature where more tourists are spending their leisure times with the environment. The industry is beginning to establish in Malaysia although it has been well developed in advanced countries. Visit Malaysia Year 1990 campaign had succeeded in bringing about more than 4 million tourists contributing an excess of RM7 billion to the Gross National Product. It is with the subsequent development and much promotion of ecotourism or nature-based tourism that tourists are more attracted to natural recources such as forests, rivers, beaches and islands. Malaysia`s 4,809 km stretch of coastline with a number of national park-gazetted islands surrounded with coral reefs have tremendous aquatourism potential which is yet to be fully developed. Within ecotourism, recreational or sport fishing has beginning to receive wider popularity. There are over 400 species of marine fish in Malaysian tropical waters, some of which are well sought after by sport fishermen due to their active responses.
