Effect of fruitone treatment on (I) the physical characteristics and physiological disorder of fresh pineapple (cv. Gandul) stored at 10 ± 1°C

Fruitone CPA ([2-(3 Chlorophenoxy) Propionic Acid]) is a plant growth regulator found to exert many beneficial effects on the characteristics of pineapples during development and postharvest storage at low temperature. A study was carried out on the effect of fruitone at different concentrations (0, 8.8, 17.6, 26.4, 35.2 and 44 ppm active ingredient) on physical characteristics (weight loss, colour, texture, marbling disease), physiological disorder (internal browning), ascorbic acid content, sensory evaluation (appearance, colour, texture, and overall acceptability) and their correlation on pineapples (cv. Gandul) duringstorage (10 ± 1°C) for fresh consumption. Low concentrations of fruitone was sufficient in maintaining quality of pineapples such as reduced weight loss, delayed ripening, increased skin and pulp firmness, due to alteration of shape, size, fruitlet air space andı internal atmosphere. The effect of fruitone in improving firmness was more noticeable on the skin than pulp of the pineapples and the effect of fruitone concentrations was more significant at the crown-end than butt-end and middle section. High concentrations of fruitone were needed to produce resistant pineapples from internal browning disorder and marbling disease. However, fruitone treatment could reduce ascorbic acid content, yet cause a reduction in internal browning disorder. The highest sensory score for appearance, colour, texture and overall acceptability was only obtained at a high fruitone concentration (44 ppm). Almost all sensory attributes in all the pineapples were correlated with ascorbic acid content, skin and pulp firmness and pulp colour.
