The effects of drought stress in barley at early seedling stage
2015
Uğur, Ö.
In this study four different osmotic pressures (control -0.45, -0.77, -1.03 Mpa) of drought stress generated by PEG 6000 were used to determine effect of seed germination on seedling growth of barley cultivars (Tarm- 92, Bülbül- 89, Karatay- 94 and Akar) in the laboratory of Field Crops Department, Faculty of Agricultural Yüzüncü Yıl University. Cultivars were significantly affected by increasing osmotic pressure generated by PEG 6000. Mean values showed that Akar cv. had the highest values as compared to other cultivars (Tarm- 92, Bülbül- 89, Karatay- 94) when the drought stress increased. This finding showed that Akar was the most drought tolerant cultivar in terms of investigated characters. As the osmotic pressure increased germination percentage, coleoptil length, shoot length, root length, fresh and dry weight shoot, fresh and dry weight root and relative water content of barley cultivars were decreased.
