Birds of Kocaeli urban forest and Umuttepe campus area of Kocaeli University

The study is the first one intended for the bird fauna in Kocaeli Urban Forest and Umuttepe Campus. It is actualised in a 12 month period between the years 2011-2012. In this study, aimed at revealing the variety and the distribution of birds in the field, transect and observation at point techniques are applied for the determination of the bird variety. In addition to the methods applied in Kocaeli Urban Forest, Territory Mapping method is used in the study. In both areas observations are done generally in the periods of 6 – 7 days. Observed species are diagnosed with the help of diagnose books and the numbers defined are written on reports. As a result of the observations held on fields, 44 species birds from the 21 families belonging to 8 teams. 21 of the 44 species defined exists in both study areas. There are 19 distinct variety in Kocaeli Urban Forest. Similarly, despite existing in Umuttepe Campus, 4 different species dont exist in Kocaeli Urban Forest. The disperison of the birds relating to teams; Ciconiiformes 1, Columbiformes 4, Coraciiformes 1, Cuculiformes 1, Falconiformes 4, Passeriformes 30, Piciformes 1 and Strigiformes 2. 28 of the defined birds are native, 13 are visitants of summer, 3 are visitant of winter. In Kocaeli Urban Forest, Passer domesticus, Fringilla coelebs, Erithacus rubecula, Parus cyaneus, Garrulus glandarius, Motacilla alba, Turdus merula have been the most observed kinds respectively. In Umuttepe Campus, Carduelis carduelis, Motacilla alba, Phoenicurus ochrurus have been the most observed species respectively.
